This craft, which has been passed down since the Edo period, involves applying patterns to the surface of glass. During the Meiji period, a unique craft technique was established by incorporating European cut glass techniques. There are around 20 unique patterns of Edo Kiriko, and they are based on natural motifs such as flowers and plants that have been familiar to Japanese people since ancient times. It was designated as a traditional craft of Japan in 2002. As one of Japan's most representative crafts, its techniques are being passed down to modern artisans, mainly in Tokyo's Koto and Sumida wards.
